Cape Verde Islands Beaches

. Thursday, March 31, 2011

Cape Verde Islands are nine islands divided in two groups: a group of six volcanic islands and another group of three flat sandy islands. The Portuguese arrived there in 1460 and since then, the islands have successively been an important sea station for boat transfer, a sugar plantation and a centre for the slave trade, finally becoming independent in 1975.

The first place to visit is Praia, on Santiago Island, the capital. There you will find amazing white sand beaches surrounded by striking mountains. Another island which is well worth visiting is Brava, the smallest and most difficult to reach, but the one which has the best beaches in the area.

In Cape Verde, specially on Santiago Island, you can easily find attractive hotels.

Sharing music and dancing with local people is one of the greatest pleasures in Cape Verde, and it combines "samba" and "salsa" music with native African sounds, resulting in an original and unique cultural expression.
If you are lucky enough to come in February, you will enjoy the marvellous Carnival, similar to the Brazilian one - as far as floats and fancy dress are concerned. Or you can visit the picturesque Port of Mindelo on San Vicente Island, or the lovely city of Villa Nova Sintra in Brava.

There are many international flights to San and to Santiago, specially from Portugal and South Africa.
The best time to visit Cape Verde is in October and November.
