Africa Beaches Aldabra (Seychelles)

. Saturday, April 2, 2011

Aldabra Atoll is the second biggest atoll in the World after Kiritimati. It is a volcanic formation that rises from as deep as 4000 metres, with a surface of 34 km in length by 15 km in width housing some of the most outstanding beaches in Seychelles. It consists of 4 coral islands forming a circle around a lagoon of 224 square kilometres, which loses its water flow at low tide. So as to protect its particular ecosystem, it has been declared World Heritage by UNESCO.

Since the atoll is so remote, it has unique flora and fauna; the small islets in the lagoon offer shelter to strange species of birds as well as offering the visitor striking uninhabited natural beaches with no permanent population exept for the scientists at the research base, who investigate the peculiar wild life of the area.

There is no accommodation available , so tourists are advised to stay in Victoria, the capital of Seychelles.

Reaching the atoll is an interesting activity itself, as the boat ride from Victoria is really impressive, and there are many cruise ships offering excursions from the capital to the atoll.
On arrival, you will be able to see the famous giant turtles which live there in great numbers. The population of turtles is ten times bigger than that of Galápagos and Ecuador beaches.
You will also have an opportunity to see the native birds in their own habitat, as they are everywhere. But if you have enough time we suggest you ask your guide to show you the bird called Aldabra, which is the only bird in the Indian Ocean that cannot fly.

The only way to reach the atoll is in a cruise ship from Victoria.
The best time to visit it is from May to September.
