With 110 square kilometres, Rodrigues is an isolated volcanic island surrounded by coral reefs and islets, and a rocky coast where you will find many of the best beaches in the world, as the island offers an environment rich in green mountains, prairies and a wide lagoon which contains small desert islets, as well.
This place, which is considered to be a paradise for trekking and nature lovers, was originally a simple stop for sailors, later a French colony until 1809 when it was conquered by the British , and is now an important tourist destination where the local quiet lifestyle spreads peace among visitors.
Rodrigues has developed so much that nowadays we can find excellent 5-star-hotels.
A unique experience is visiting Montagne National Reserve, where the indigenous jungle is being recovered, and you can feel the atmosphere these isolated islands had thousands of years ago, which both the expert and the ordinary tourist will enjoy.
Saint Gabriel´s Catedral, built in stone in Gothic Style, is well worth visiting, as well as the spice market in Port Mathurin, specially on Saturdays. But what you cannot miss is visiting the many caves with stalactites and stalagmites that the island has.
You can get to Rodrigues by plane from Mauritius Islands.
The temperatures are very pleasant all the year, so come when you like.
